PETESAA LLC provides Emotional Support Animal (ESA) and Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) evaluations through licensed healthcare professionals. This Airline Policy explains important information regarding air travel with support animals and the limitations of ESA and PSD documentation.

1. Emotional Support Animals (ESA) and Air Travel

Under current United States Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, airlines are generally not required to recognize Emotional Support Animals as service animals.

Most airlines treat Emotional Support Animals as pets and may require:

  • Pet fees
  • Carrier requirements
  • Size restrictions
  • Breed restrictions
  • Advance reservations

An ESA letter does not guarantee airline approval, fee waivers, cabin access, or transportation privileges.

Passengers are solely responsible for reviewing their airline's current policies before travel.

2. Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSD) and Air Travel

Psychiatric Service Dogs may qualify as service animals under applicable federal regulations when:

  • The individual has a qualifying disability; and
  • The dog is individually trained to perform specific tasks directly related to that disability.

PSD letters may assist in documenting an individual's disability-related need; however, airlines may require additional documentation and verification.

Airline acceptance remains subject to carrier policies and applicable laws.

3. Airline Documentation Requirements

Airlines may require:

  • U.S. DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Forms
  • Behavioral attestations
  • Vaccination records
  • Health certificates
  • Additional carrier-specific documentation

Requirements vary by airline and may change without notice.

Passengers should contact their airline directly before travel.

4. Advance Notice

Petesaa recommends contacting your airline at least 72 hours before departure to confirm:

  • Current service animal requirements
  • Required forms
  • Submission deadlines
  • Breed, size, and carrier restrictions
  • International travel requirements

Failure to comply with airline requirements may result in denied boarding or transportation restrictions.

5. International Travel

International travel with animals may involve additional requirements, including:

  • Import permits
  • Vaccination records
  • Quarantine regulations
  • Health certificates
  • Government approvals

Travelers are responsible for complying with all destination-country regulations.

Petesaa does not provide legal advice regarding international animal transportation requirements.

6. No Guarantee of Airline Approval

Petesaa cannot guarantee:

  • Airline acceptance
  • Cabin access
  • Waived pet fees
  • Boarding approval
  • Travel accommodations

Final determinations are made solely by the airline and applicable transportation authorities.

7. Passenger Responsibilities

Passengers are responsible for ensuring that their animal:

  • Is properly trained and under control
  • Meets airline behavior standards
  • Complies with applicable transportation regulations
  • Meets vaccination and health requirements
  • Does not pose a direct threat to others

Airlines may refuse transportation for animals that do not meet applicable requirements.

8. Additional Documentation Requests

If additional documentation is required by an airline, Petesaa may assist in coordinating requests with the evaluating provider when appropriate and legally permitted.

Additional fees may apply for supplemental documentation or provider-completed airline forms.

9. Disclaimer

ESA and PSD letters issued through Petesaa are clinical recommendations provided by licensed healthcare professionals following an evaluation.

These documents are not:

  • Airline approvals
  • Government-issued certifications
  • Service animal registrations
  • Travel permits
  • Guarantees of transportation access

Airline policies may change at any time, and travelers should verify current requirements directly with their carrier before booking or traveling.
